Fritz and I are carrying heavy hearts today. Friday May 30th - TopicsExpress

Fritz and I are carrying heavy hearts today. Friday May 30th around 3:00am, our Forbes passed away – he was 10 years old. Forbes enriched our lives and filled our hearts for 8 precious years. Forbes was rescued by Jim Bueler and Bruce Ferko with Scottie Kingdom Dog Rescue on May 17th, 2006. Ft Worth animal control contacted Jim and Bruce after picking up Forbes as a stray. They rushed to Ft. Worth to rescue Forbes, and drove him straight to the vet. Forbes was in the worst of health! He was heartworm positive, had a heart murmur, and a large portion of his body was bare and infected. The little fur he had was twisted and knotted. Jim and Bruce saw a beautiful dog while others would have euthanized him. Jim and Bruce have made it their mission in life to save Scotties and other terriers from the mistreatment and abuse from people. Jim and Bruce are true Super Heroes!!! Before Forbes, we had Winfield (Scottish Terrier) and Abby (English Cocker Spaniel). Winfield passed March 28th, 2005 after a battle with lymphoma. Chemo and radiation could not beat the disease. He was only 6 years old. Abby had a very long life. She passed on August 28th, 2006. She was 17 years old. We met Jim and Bruce at the North Texas Scottish Festival at UT Arlington in June 2005. We immediately bonded and admired their mission to save Scotties (my favorite breed). Fritz and I began volunteering with the dog rescue. We wanted to adopt, but it wasn’t feasible with Abby being a senior dog, and she did not care for non-humans. Abby passed the following year in September. Our home was too quiet. Our home had lost its heart beat and it was unbearable. We contacted Jim and Bruce not long after Abby passed. They introduced us to several dogs. We wanted to take them all! We decided on Neelam, a puppy, and Stewart and Argyle. Jim and Bruce called Stewart and Argyle “The Spastic Brothers”. OMG…They couldn’t have been more accurate. We LOVED their energy! We also met Forbes. He was a BIG Scottie with an even BIGGER life force. It was a tough decision, but we decided on Neelam, Stewart and Argyle. We felt awful for not adopting Forbes. We adopted Forbes a couple days later. “The Boys” was soon coined to name our clan of Scotties. Forbes started to have bouts with aspiration pneumonia several years ago. This past October, it started occurring every month. His doctor could not determine the cause. We took him to an internist. We did very expensive specialized blood labs which were negative. We did specialized imaging tests to check for disorders in the swallowing mechanism that could contribute to his aspirating. Unfortunately, no test could provide us with answers. All the doctors and specialists were dumbfounded. There was no diagnosis for Forbes. We were left rushing him to the animal hospital every time he started to express symptoms. We knew it was a matter of time before we ran out of luck because of scaring from pneumonia and antibiotic resistance. I rushed Forbes to the ER at 4am Thursday morning and started oral antibiotics. We went back again later that afternoon. We rushed him back Thursday evening. The news was grave. The pneumonia was progressing too fast before antibiotics could begin to work. He passed just after 3am Friday morning. The doctors performed CPR but his poor body could not recover. Forbes’ passing has left an immense void in our hearts. To say the pain is unbearable is an understatement. Forbes was my sidekick. He was my shadow. When we cooked, he was there beside us to help. When we vacuumed, he immediately rushed to our side to supervise. He divided his time going between our two laps and an occasional side trip to the water bowl. Fritz’s head and our legs will never be as clean now that he has passed. Forbes slept between us every night, many times with his head pressed against ours, or resting on our shoulders, or placed on the pillow next to our faces. If you look closely at the sky, you will see it is a little darker than it was before. Our hearts and lives will never be the same without Forbes. I want to thank Jim and Bruce with Scottie Kingdom Dog Rescue for saving Forbes’ life, and for the amazing years we had with Forbes. Somehow, they knew we were meant to be together. If you would like to see before and after pictures of Forbes’ rescue, and read his rescue story, please continue reading below. If you are able, I also that you PLEASE donate to a local dog charity or, preferably, Scottie Kingdom Dog Rescue in memory of Forbes Taggart-Black. He will be available for adoption on or before August 31st! scottiekingdom/forbes.htm Hello! My name is Forbes. I was given this name by the volunteers at Scottie Kingdom Rescue. I dont think Ive ever had a name before. I dont remember. Ive been walking the streets, searching for someone that could help me and finally got picked up by Animal Control. No one cared enough about me to bring me home, so after my hold time was up, I was rescued. Its a scary time in my life. Ive been on the streets, dodging cars and having strangers try to grab me. I dont feel good and I know I dont look good either. Now Ive been moved again, but this time I feel safer. The place is clean and the doctors and nurses are really nice to me. Im being fed good food and having lots of tests run to find out whats wrong with me so I can get better. Yesterday, (May 17th) I was given a pill to kill the fleas that were on me. I also took a little pink pill to help stop the itching. Ive never itched so much before and I just want it to stop. Ive scratched my hair off in several places and have sores and scabs on my side, chest, and back. They tell me theyre going to cut a lot of my hair off so they can see all of my skin and give me a bath. I know it will feel good to be clean again. A few minutes ago, I heard the nurse call the folks at Scottie Kingdom Rescue. She told them I had worms... Heartworms. Then the doctor called and said I had a bacterial infection in my eyes. I also have a heart murmur. But my blood tests came back and said I didnt have any other problems. (Like I already dont have enough to worry about!). Im going to be on antibiotics and antihistamines for my skin. And Ill have eye drops put in my eyes twice a day. I still need my vaccinations, neutering, and heartworm treatment, but the doctors wont do any of that anytime soon, because Im too sick. After Im cleaned up today, Ill be going to my foster home where Ive heard Im going to be eating two or maybe even three times a day for a while!!! Yahoo!!! FOOD!!! The doctors want me to gain some weight since my ribs and spine are showing. So Ill be looking forward to getting my breakfast, lunch and dinner from a bowl, instead of off the street. So thats my story for now. Ill try to keep you updated from time to time or have my new friends at Scottie Kingdom Rescue do it for me. Maybe in a few months youll want to adopt me? I am going to get well and then Ill be back to being the proud Scot that I once was. Thank you, My name is Forbes. Im just 2 years old. UPDATE: Thank you to all of my new friends that donated to my care. Im receiving all of the medical attention that I need and will be available for adoption soon. Maybe as soon as August 31st! Scottie Kingdom Rescue is a 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization. We prefer to adopt to families with past Scottie, Westie and/or Terrier experience, but realize this isn’t always possible. You must have a secure & fenced yard. We do not ship our pets. If you have that special place in your heart & in your home for a Scottie (or any of our other available Rescue Dogs), please be prepared to visit us in Dallas for an in person meet & greet session with our Available Dogs. If you have existing pets, they must travel to Dallas with you, so we can be assured that they will be compatible with the new addition to your family. Please contact us at Rescue@scottiekingdom to receive an Adoption Application or for more information on our Adoption process. Also, please take the time to visit our website scottiekingdom for further information. Thank you for considering Adoption!
