From 1948 through to 1994 Eskom was a government-owned monopoly - TopicsExpress

From 1948 through to 1994 Eskom was a government-owned monopoly that was considered by most South Africans at the time to be slow, expensive and inefficient. However, some facts about Eskom during that period include: it provided 60% of the electricity in all of Africa; it provided the third-cheapest electricity in the world (compared with the current 17th most expensive in the world); and there were no scheduled Black-Outs/Power Failures (load-shedding). New power stations were built every four years and they were completed within budget and on time. Now, Medupi and Kusile are years behind schedule and many times over budget. Before 1994 we had so much spare capacity that we sold it to other countries, providing an essential knock-on to the South African economy. How can Eskom executives and management and government possibly defend their shocking performance record over the past 20 years? No electricity means chasing away investors & employers & the resultant loss of hope for the promised jobs. What have the huge number of unemployed South Africans done to deserve the current situation? They have repeatedly voted for the ANC.....
