From Amando de Leon: Regarding your topic pamumuhay ng umaasensong bansa - these are what i have observed in Canada - 1.. not politicized at all - each election day, no meeting de avance, magagalit ang mamamayan, no posters around, magagalit ang mamamayan, no loud speakers, magagalit ang mamamayan, etc. - what im trying to say is that citizens here have a voice, you cannot mess up with the canadians. 2. elected officials - they have no drivers, they drive their own cars, car plates are not specialized, di kagaya sa atin, naging konsehal lang, ang carplate naging COUNCILOR they have no body guards or they will be broadcast in the news. they go shopping or do groceries by themselves, they have no perks, stores make them pay. going back to election, there is no holiday at all, either you go to precinct yourselves or go online. it is just like any ordinary day. because each day is so important to canadians, you dont mess up with their time to work, time to pleasure, etc. 3. not much holidays in canada, there are only 12 holidays in a year. again because canadians need to work. very hardworking people. 4. walang tambay, maybe you have gone to toronto or any canadian city. if you are lost you can come into any store to ask for direction, but you cannot ask to any stambay kasi walang stambay A - Canadian and American cultures are REACTIONS to the former oppressive colonial systems in the countries where the immigrants escaped/came from. That is why they are like that. They created their NEW country specifically to purge themselves if such social ills. Such social and political systems have context. The Philippines does not have that context. Filipinos have not yet created a new society. President Marcos tried to do that: create a New Society but you know what happened.
