From Atoms to Molecules and Cells Living organisms are composed of organic molecules which are regarded as the chemicals of life. The feature that distinguishes an organic from inorganic molecule is that organic molecules contain carbon-hydrogen bonds, whereas inorganic molecules do not. The four major classes of organic molecules include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates are composed of molecules composed of carbon and water. Carbohydrates are organic molecules classified according to their structure. Monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrate. Oligosaccharides consist of short chains of monosaccharide units. Polysaccharides are long chains of monosaccharide units.
