From Austin Historical Museum, Nevada. Mule drawn wagons were the primary way of transportation from the 1860s through 1881 to get lumber and materials to the mines at the top of the Pony Canyon. In 1881, the Austin City Railroad was built to connect the Manhattan Mining District to the Clifton Mine at the base of the Pony Canyon. The span of railroad track covered 2.8 miles and the small train engine was referred to as the Mules Relief. The Mules Relief operated until 1889 until the decline of rich ore deposits in Austin, Nevada.
