Just what is a Welfare Rider? Bear with me while I try to answer that question. The motorcycle community is constantly being attacked by advocates for safety, restrictive laws, and local community zealots of one sort,or the other. There are motorcyclist rights organizations that remain vigilant and try to preserve the right to ride free of restrictions and who are actively watching for new restrictive laws and fighting to remove existing restrictive laws from the statutes. Members of these organizations devote their time and energy into saving and procuring the freedoms and protections we cherish and desire as motorcyclists. At the local and state level there are groups like the Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE, and the Confederation of Clubs, who work together to make sure that we ride as free as possible, unencumbered by laws and conditions that interfere with our freedom to ride as we wish. At the National Level we have organizations like the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, and the American Motorcycle Association who maintain a watch over the activities of the National Government and its regulatory agencies (i.e. The NHTSA, The NTSB, and the CDC) who have frequently attacked our rights to ride free. Many riders who are concerned about losing their freedoms have joined and actively participate in the activities of these organizations. They realize that it requires a vigilant citizenry to avoid government over-control and maintain the freedoms we currently have; and, to remove the restrictive laws that interfere with our right to ride, when, where, and in the fashion we desire. These organizations and their members are often referred to as “Freedom Fighters”. On the other hand there are riders who are completely unaware of, or indifferent to, the challenges we face in maintaining our freedoms. These riders go along enjoying the freedoms that others have earned for them. When a new restriction is placed on them by the government they are frequently the first to say: “Why didn’t you guys (Freedom Fighters) do something about this new restriction. We refer to these latter riders as “Welfare Riders”because they live off the efforts of others (the Freedom Fighters). I noticed that you have recently purchased an Ultra. Congratulations. I have owned many motorcycles over many years (a number which I will not reveal... don’t want anyone to know what an old codger I really am). For many years I refused to even think about purchasing a cruiser... I often called them an “old man’s bike”. Now that I finally own one I have never been happier! I hope you enjoy many safe years on the road enjoying the freedom and comfort that your Ultra provides. You didn’t speak of how many years you have been riding. Regardless of your experience level, I would like to offer you a challenge. Become one of the Freedom Fighters... it doesn’t matter if you have been riding for many years or if you are just becoming involved with the freedoms of motorcycling - the motorcycle rights movement needs you and your support. Join and support one or more of the motorcyclist rights organizations that is keeping watch over your freedoms. I invite you to find out more about these organizations and become one of the Freedom Fighters, don’t be a welfare rider. You can find out more about NC freedom fighting organizations at this link: cba-abatenc.org/ At the National level: mrf.org/ To get a little peak at some of the problems and dangers to the motorcycle community you can go to: nccomc.org/.
