From Beyond the Arc: PBA Teams Bracing For 2013 Rookie Draft October 22, 2013 by WDJ On November 3, the 10 Philippine Basketball Association ballclubs will take turns in selecting from around 85 rookie hopefuls led by Greg Slaughter and Ian Sangalang in the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft to be held at Robinson’s Manila in Ermita. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel will pick first in the draft after Air21, which owns the original pick, won over Globalport in the lottery. The Batang Pier’s No. 2 pick also went to San Mig Coffee in a previous trade involving Josh Urbiztondo. The Kings acquired the Express’ original rookie pick in exchange for John Wilson and the 2012-13 PBA Season’s Most Improved Player, KG Canaleta. Wilson was eventually shipped to Meralco alongside Noy Baclao for Carlo Sharma and Vic Manuel in another player swap. Slaughter is slated to emerge as the top freshman selection by the Kings although there is a strong possibility that former San Sebastian College-Recoletos center, the 6-7 Sangalang, might steal the show just like when Baclao was selected ahead of Rabeh Al-Hussaini a few years back. Rain or Shine will be picking at No. 3 and Coach Yeng Guiao is 100 percent sure of selecting 6-7 1/2 Letran slotman Raymund Almazan to address the Elasto Painters’ achilles heel — the center position with ROS expected to trade Beau Belga later in the offseason. The biggest gainer in this year’s rookie draft rites will definitely be the Barako Bull Energy Colas of Coach Rajko Toroman as the team will be selecting at No. 4, No. 5 and No.6, followed by Globalport at No. 7, Alaska, Rain or Shine and San Mig Coffee in that particular order. Barako Bull is expected to choose Far Eastern University backcourt duo Terrence Romeo and Ryan Roose Garcia as well as 6-2 guard Jeron Teng of losing UAAP finalist University of Santo Tomas, although the name of James Forrester of Arellano University has been circulating as the team’s No. 6 pick. If that happens, the Batang Pier might as well select Garcia or Teng or maybe, a big man in the paint in the mold of 6-9 center Isaac Holstein or 6-5 slotman Justin Chua of Ateneo de Manila University. Another option would be 6-4 forward Nico Salva of the Blue Eagles. As for the Aces, the Uytengsu franchise is anticipated to land a big man from the draft like Holstein or Chua to serve as an understudy to Joachim Thoss and Gabby Espinas with the likes of Salva and Joshua Webb of De La Salle University are also being considered. In the second round, the order of drafting will have Globalport picking at No. 11 followed by ROS, SMC, Barako Bull, Air21, Alaska, Talk ‘N Text, Alaska again, Rain or Shine and Barako Bull. In all, Emman Monfort’s ballclub will benefit the most although his fellow Ilonggo rookie hopeful, the 5-8 Antonio Jose Caram of San Beda, may end up as a rookie free agent. watchmendaily/opinion/beyond-arc-pba-teams-bracing-2013-rookie-draft/ #adminbubbles
