From CBST member Yuval Moses: Aug 2nd, 12:50am Ive been going to Shabbat services with CBST for 1.5 years now and have had many meaningful nights; tonight was the most powerful yet. Im an Israeli living in NYC and the last few weeks have been difficult in many ways, to say the least. One of those ways is the dialogue in Israel that restricts any discussion about the loss of innocent Palestinians: children, women and men. As opposed to Yinon Magal, the editor of Walla! an important news portal in Israel, I identify as human first then Israeli and Jewish. Mourning the loss of civilians on both sides should be encouraged, what are we if we cant mourn and condemn the loss of innocent lives (even while defending ourselves)?! After weeks of cognitive processing Rabbi Klienbaums words tonight opened my heart to emotionally experiencing that loss for the first time, and as I envisioned the Israeli children marching into Gaza at night scared to death and determined to serve their country (I was once one of those kids), and the families in Gaza as they await a faith unknown, tears ran down my cheeks and shivers down my spine. The hatred, racism and use of force must stop. The support from fellow congregants, long time friends and those Ive met tonight for the first time, was inspiring and I felt held. Thank you CBST for being the community I have always wished and longed for.
