From Eric Oliver This week’s Torah portion, VaYeshev, tells the story of Joseph. The Bible’s tale of sibling rivalry and Joseph’s travails were captured by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in their “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (which was originally composed as a cantata for an English boys’ school, but was ultimately enhanced for the Broadway stage to launch their careers!) This week’s reading concludes with Joseph languishing in jail after having been falsely accused of assaulting Potiphar’s wife. Rice and Webber put poignant words in Joseph’s mouth, referencing his continuing faith in God (“Children of Israel are never alone”) and his confidence that he will ultimately be redeemed (“For I have been promised a land of my own.”) This Torah portion always comes in close proximity to Hanukkah, the Jewish celebration of freedom and light https://youtube/watch?v=PVWpgmiIbas
