From H LEE Robinson: What defines a BANDOG!!!! In referrence to those that say it must contain Mastiff or some type of bulldog...lets be real clear about something...A non-working Mastiff x any non-working bulldog does NOT make a bandog because it IS WORKING ABILITY that defines what a bandog is. The name means bound by chain or leash...and released to catch quarry. The name is descriptive of action...like racing, hunting, protecting, or drafting...it is not a breed and IF you think it is THEN you are part of the PROBLEM that makes the bandog not work like it should. Now, if YOU have a given formula of breeds or traits...fine...that can be used to define your desired line, strain, or even breed...but you CANNOT redefine a term that is at least several centuries old. I use the name American Sentinel to define my strain of working bandog. If you want to say an American Bandog is XYZ that is fine...but do not tell me a Bandog (in a general sense of the term) has to be composed of XYZ because when & if you do all you do is illustrate your lack of understanding of the Bandog concept...which is the reason so many bandogs suck. Also, dont tell me you work your dogs if you clearly dont know HOW to...because you cannot repeatedly do something successfully if you dont know how to. If this fits you, then be a student of Bandogs and LEARN what they are BEFORE you start telling others that you know what they are. A lot of people that claim to have bandogs have nothing more than glorified mutts that have NEVER been secured by leash or chain and RELEASED to catch quarry. If you havent seen your dog run down, catch, and fight adversay...then you dont know if you have a Bandog or not...and therefore have no business using the Bandog name. Mastiff x pit/bulldog is not a Bandog. A dog playing with a tug is not a Bandog. A weight pull dog is not a Bandog. A glorified mutt that is called a Bandog (by people that dont know what a Bandog is) does not make the dog a Bandog. If you want to call your dog a Bandog...then show it being RELEASED to catch a man or a beast.
