From Judith Maidenbaum, the grande dame of Kauneonga Lake: Last - TopicsExpress

From Judith Maidenbaum, the grande dame of Kauneonga Lake: Last night friends came to the Fat Lady after our kitchen closed and we ordered Benji and Jake’s” Death by Pizza,” and savored every morsel of intense deliciousness, drank wine, and talked late into the night. I thought back to my early days at the lake, when I had no kitchen and there was hardly any food to be had on a late weekday night, much less great food that’s unique and prepared by friends whom you love. Coming from Manhattan where you lie in bed and order in a taste of anywhere, I felt challenged. In Kauneonga Lake in the early 90’s you could spend your day off drinking in the gorgeous scenery, walk the hills, feel the oxygen healing your clogged airways, but you couldn’t invite friends and call in for really great food. You had to cook it yourself. That has changed. Kauneonga Lake was written up this week in The River Reporter and we got great reviews. And they didn’t even notice our own unique transport system---the golf cart express--- our pet yentas, local insaniacs& philosophers who add color and character to our town. In what other American Hamlet can you munch down a BLT Wrap (watching a Shtrammelled Gent stroll by intoning ancient sounds, a bare-chested Russian jogger and a tattoo decorated descendent of the beloved Bimis on a skateboard) all the while chatting with a fellow diner who remembers the Borsht Belt as if it were yesterday because his father’s uncle’s second cousin owned Grossinger’s and would turn over in her grave to think a Casino could be built in its place. “Casini Cashmino,” what the Catskills needs to revive itself, he insists, is getting discovered. Like Lana Turner, we’ve got everything it takes, but someone has to pull up the sweater and roam the hills.” Who let this guy in? “What the Catskills needs” is just what is happening in Kauneonga Lake and in other towns that are waking up slowly but surely. One small business after another. That’s what it takes. And then support for what we have built, and you, my readers have done that. You’ve supported us and we thank you. And we want to entice you to keep it up, keep it up. Labor Day Weekend has arrived just before your tax bill, and to wash it all down, here’s what we’ve got for you: This Friday Night at The Fat Lady Cafe: The Allen Brothers on the Deck And while the jazz plays, from the kitchen some lovingly prepared Specials: She Crab Bisque Seafood Platter: Shrimp, Scallops and Sockeye Salmon Rib eye Steak for one or two Smothered in Caramelized Onions Grilled Sushi Grade Tuna Steak Trout all sorts of ways Miracle Duck: Crispy yet Juicy and Tender I go South for more fish in the early morning tomorrow.
