From Mr Morrison I hope that this weekly bulletin finds each of you in good heath and enjoying your weekend. I cannot believe how rapidly this first nine weeks grading period is going. Thanks for all you do for our kids. Exciting Week- This past week was truly an exciting week in our school system. First, it was Homecoming. The game and dance went very well. The victory raised our overall record to 5-1 with a big game coming up this weekend against Springboro. Congratulations to Coach Delong, all the assistant coaches, and all the players for a wonderful victory. Thanks to high school teacher John Snyder who served as the special assistant coach for this game. Kudos to Debb Rucker and Keenan Mikal who worked with student council to put on such a successful Homecoming dance. They decorations in the gym and the behavior of the students was awesome. I was ready to dance but they did not play Bob Segers Old Time Rock and Roll. So I just watched from the sidelines. The 740 students in attendance all had a great time. Second, we had an Author visit each of the elementary schools and had a special program for families on Tuesday evening. It was also Spirit Week- and do we ever have spirit!! The high school had American Day, Disney Day, Class Day-flashback, superhero, jungle and senior citizens. Staff dressed like they did in high school. The high school also had Beach Day and Blue and White Day. Other Spirit days throughout the district included Wear Yellow Day, Wear Neon Day, Dress as Your Favorite Storybook Character Day, and Favorite Sports Team Day. Everyone got into the spirit and had a great time. Kudos also to our Marching Band and Color Guard as they were named Band of the Week by Channel 2. They appeared on the Channel 2 Operation Football Program last Friday evening. Bond Refinancing- Wow! The school district had a successful bond pricing last Thursday. The final all-in interest cost was 4.011%, close to historic low interest rates. We achieved a total savings for the Xenia taxpayers of $1,276,824, which equates to a present value savings of $658,452, or 3.243% of the refunded bonds. Additionally we no longer risk any further subsidy reductions from the federal government. The bonds were bought by two investment firms-Performance Trust and Franklin. The $18.5 million municipal bonds were sold in just three minutes!!! Terrific news! Author Visit- The elementary schools celebrated Literacy Week this past week. Author Mike Thaler visited each elementary school building for a full day assembly. Students had the opportunity to hear him speak, have lunch with him, have an autograph session and have class photos taken. On Tuesday evening, September 30th, there was a community event at Tecumseh Elementary School from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. attended by more than one hundred community members and their children. Every day a multitude of activities took place in each of our elementary schools including kickoff assemblies, bookmarks and bookworms for the students, reading via closed circuit television, building wide-hallway read-ins, and community readers. Thanks to everyone for your hard work to make this week so special but especially to Jean Brady who arranged for the author to come to Xenia and to Stephanie Johnston who really ran with this idea. Kudos also to all of our guest readers who went into the classrooms to read to the students. The readers were Christy Fielding, Carla Long, Tracy Jarvis, Cheryl Marcus, Perk Reichley, Nate Warner, Nodie Washington, Lee Rose, Patty Griest, Dr. Paul Dillaplain, Ron Swiger, Angela Hawes and Misha Monnin. No one stands as tall as one who helps a child. Thanks everyone. Great job. Artifact- Xenia Township has supplied a piece of the World Trade Center for our high school students to see in the lobby. This artifact will eventually be displayed at the township offices on Route 68. The Township Staff would like the students help in designing that final display. They asked for teachers to incorporate this artifact into their lesson plans. Creative Writing? Art? Design? Physics? Social Studies? I cannot wait to see the final results. Thanks to Pat Marrinan for assisting with this project. The World of Sports- This past week the volleyball team lost to Lebanon and Northmont but defeated Trotwood. Girls tennis lost to Butler and Shawnee. Boys and girls soccer both defeated Miamisburg and boys soccer tied Greenon. Golf finished 1st in the Sectional to advance to the District competition this Thursday. Sectional Champions! The Xenia boys golf team was crowned sectional champions this past Wednesday. The Bucs shot a team score of 316 at Reid Park North which was good enough to finish first in the 15 team event. Senior Noah Pickering was medalist in the tourney and posted a 37 40 77 for 18 holes. Sophomore Evan Adkins shot 37 42 79. Junior Alex Bolka shot 41 39 80. Senior Austin Graham fired 38 42 80 and Senior Austin Newell shot 44 44 88. The Bucs now advance to the District competition Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. FFA Competition- The Xenia FFA participated in the finals of the State Forestry Contest Saturday in Nelsonville, Ohio at Hocking Hills College. Students participating were Brady Harris, Hailey Harris, Destiny Anderson, Alyson Martinez, Jordan Gerhardt, and Ethan Pitzer. Prior to going, they did some of the contest online and were ranked 13th in the State. Brad Lokai is the Agri-Science Instructor and FFA Advisor. Elementary Choir- Elementary music teachers have started auditions for a district-wide elementary choir. This group will meet one day per week after school. To date they have listened to over 100 children. There has been community interest in having this group perform at upcoming events in Xenia. It has been more than 15 years since there were elementary choirs in the schools. I cannot wait to hear them perform. Great job. Building Reps- Congratulations to Paula Fleming, Annmarie Evans, Pam Ford, Angie Reed, Denise Garrett, Pam Killingsworth, Gwen McQuary, Katie Quist, Janice Harrison, Rose Prater, Amy Thompson, Matt Bartley, Janean Cardenas, Melissa Finkes and Phil Noble who will be serving as the XEA Building Representatives for this school year. Ive learned that age is important only if you are a cheese. Ive learned that going the extra mile puts you miles ahead of your competition. Ive learned that a fulfilled life is not possible without friends. Ive learned that the quality of service in a hotel is in direct proportion to the thickness of their towels. Ive learned that you should invest in your family first and in your career second. Ive learned that it is impossible to teach without learning something yourself. Ive learned that when a man with money meets a man with experience, the man with experience ends up with the money and the man with the money ends up with experience. Ive learned that no one makes potato salad as good as moms. Ive learned that if you depend on others to make you happy, youll be endlessly disappointed. Have a great week.
