From Mr Morrison Students in the Xenia Community School - TopicsExpress

From Mr Morrison Students in the Xenia Community School District are learning cutting edge technology. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs both at the middle schools and the high school are helping prepare Xenia students for 21st century careers in a global economy. Sixth grade students take a one semester Design and Modeling course in a new computer lab with Vex Robotic kits. Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to take Design and Modeling as well as Automation and Robotics. Six project-based and hands on STEM courses are offered at the high school. These courses transfer to Sinclair College and other universities. Grades six through twelve all have 3D printers. Xenia Community Schools are committed to improving communication and increasing transparency. The School Board and administration are out in the community listening to concerns and sharing the good news with our investors. We have great students, wonderful teachers, dedicated staff members and a supportive community. We want every child to be successful. Our challenges will not disappear overnight, but together we can overcome any obstacle. Our schools, our children, and our community deserve our very best, and the District will do everything possible to exceed expectations. Xenia Schools Virtual Academy is a dynamic new learning opportunity. This program offers online classes to students enrolled in grades 9-12. Students can select from over 140 course options that include taking enrichment courses, advanced placement courses, and credit bearing courses. Students can create a personalized learning path or take one course. The students have 24/7 support from core teachers online. The District is looking outside of the traditional school to make sure students needs are being met. Keeping students and staff safe is the number one priority. In order to keep everyone safe, every building needs to have security measures in place. At the elementary buildings, the main entrance has a door to the breezeway with the doors leading directly into the building locked. In order to get into the building, the office personnel must unlock the door for each guest. This enables the students to stay in their rooms to learn in a safe environment. Recently a new remote locking system, with cameras and two way communication has been put in place at the secondary buildings thanks to a state grant received by the District. It is our priority for the students to be in a safe, secure learning environment every day, focused on their educational goals and their future. Many exciting new project-based, hands-on curricular programs have been added this year to our already existing programs. We now have a Virtual Academy for high school students who do not learn in the traditional manner. We have added Project Lead the Way STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) at Warner and Central Middle Schools. We added an advanced math class at Central Middle School. Every student at Central Middle School is using a new laptop in their classes. At the elementary level, we have returned music education back into the curriculum, we have added a new digital literacy class, and we have reinstituted two guidance counselors. Exciting things are happening in each of our school buildings. The district is acting in a fiscally responsible manner with revenues surpassing expenditures. The district also recently completed the sale of almost $20 million in municipal bonds savings the taxpayers of the school district almost $1.3 million. We anticipated 4,395 students to be enrolled in our school district when we opened our doors in August, 2014, but we surpassed that number with 4,510 students actually attending. Finally, last year our school district earned an A Rating in the Value Added category, the highest rating we could achieve. Good things are happening in Xenia Community Schools.
