From ODJA...November 5, 2005…Guitarist (Rumble, Raw-Hide) Link Wray died at 76. Wray was noted for pioneering a new overdriven, distorted, fuzz sound for electric guitars and inventing the power chord. In 1958, his composition Oddball came to the attention of Archie Bleyer at Cadence Records who, although he realized its commercial potential, hated it, particularly after Wray poked holes in his amplifiers speakers to make the recording sound more like the live version that had excited concert crowds. Cadence artist Phil Everly suggested renaming Wrays tune Rumble, since it reminded him of a street gang. The menacing sound of Rumble and its title led to a ban by several radio stations, a rare feat for an instrumental, on the grounds that it glorified juvenile delinquency... I saw him at the Lucky Dog in Worcester (formerly Sir Morgans Cove) back on Sept 14, 1999 ! He still rocked ! youtube/watch?v=bjs5QWjvNWc
