From Sicily, does this sound familiar.....Author Alfred Zappala comments to a FB Post. A little long but makes sense. Salvatore: I admire your love of Sicily. It is a fast ,easy and sweeping way to shift blame instead of analyzing things. here are some major problems I see. 1. the unions. They choke, and have strangled the economy. They have feathered their beds (and have delivered massive votes too) themselves with the politicians. To have a union contract is nirvana. To get fired from a union is almost an impossibility. The Italian Civil Code has over 1500 pages of employee rights. Union workers have no motivation for innovation whatsoever, and most importantly, with a pay of 13 months per year, huge vacations and pensions, the criticial component of Italian society is left out in the cold. Unions are older in age and the young cannot get anyplace. If you blame the polticians, you must include the unions too. People here have a natural distrust for authority too. . Politics. What was the saying after WWII? Go to bed a Fascist, wake up a Christian Democrat. What was the option? Communisim or Socialism? The guys with the Independent movement (less than 5% of Sicily by the way) are almost all left-leaning socialist who view anyone with investment money as the enemy. Thus, a fundamental shift must take place with the Sicilian mindset. There are many problems, my friend, but many many many brushes are necessary to paint the true picture....Only by intelligent discussion can we change things.
