From Straight To Video **************************************************************** For the next 10 days or so I wanna look at the songs featured on the new Straight To Video album, who recorded the original version and who featured on the new S2V version. Plus I wanna dive back and look at the films theyre from. I think itll be fun, so here goes.... Track 1 - Time Runs Wild Originally recorded by Danny Wilde Taken from the 1989 Film Dream A Little Dream Why do we have to take something so far that it cant be taken back? Ill tell you why - because were young, and when youre young, every little thing seems so big. Its no big secret that I was and still am a big fan of Corey Feldman and the late Corey Haim, but strangely this film slipped by me when it was originally released. I was well aware of its existence but I think it must have gone straight to the video shelves here in the UK rather than getting a cinema release and was also the time I was heavily obsessing over my new love or Rock Music so films took a bit of back seat. I finally got round to seeing it a few years ago. Im not gonna lie, I was disappointed. Some 80s films can stand the test of time and hold up on viewing with fresh modern day eyes (Fast Times / Valley Girl) but despite a stellar old school cast featuring Jason Robards and Harry Dean Stanton, along with a remarkably solid and understated role from Haim as Dinger, its just a bit of a confused mess for the most part. Feldman is in total MJ mode throughout and the film seems nothing more than an extended vehicle for its two leads.... License To Drive worked, this not so much. They obviously tried to add something new to what films such as BIG and Vice Versa had done well several years earlier but fall a little short. What did hit me like a lightning bolt though was what has become one of my all time favourite songs in Time Runs Wild which had me hooked and searching YouTube by the second chorus. It really is an amazing anthem and straight away I wanted to take on the challenge to recreate it for S2V. If you remember the band The Rembrandts, who did the Friends TV Show theme, Danny Wilde was part of that band and this is from one of his solo albums. Perhaps my biggest challenge though was to find someone to sing it. I didnt wanna go for a straight ahead Rock Vocal, it had to have something of a twist to it and whilst playing the song on our Monthly Noize Level Critical Radio Show, for the 1000th time, I realised I had the perfect person alongside me all the time! Dave Kerr would be able to give the song just enough Country to balance out the Rock and like most people, hed not heard this song but it quickly became a favourite. The breakdown in the middle of the original is amazing and I think we did a solid job of recreating it, it also gives the keyboard parts added by James Martin of Vega some space to shine through. And, when Dave sings Life was simple and you were mine, I get goosebumps every time! For the guitar parts I bought on board Davey Rocks who put down the initial guitar hook then I contacted my LET LOOSE buddy Grant Spicer to fill out all the extra parts to go with the acoustic Dave Kerr put down when he did the vocals. As all the songs on the album, Michael Richards lays down the solid drums! From the very beginning I wanted this to be the opening song on the album and Im thrilled it turned out so will to be able to do that. I think the S2V version has more of an acoustic country tinged vibe than the 80s arena rock of the Danny Wilde version but hopefully it will turn a whole new audience onto this great song. **************************************************************** Time Runs Wild - Straight To Video Version Vocals & Acoustic Guitar – Dave Kerr (Silverjet / TCC) Guitars – Grant Spicer (Let Loose) / Davey Rocks Keyboards – James Martin (Vega) Bass – Rob Lane Drums – Michael Richards ****************************************************************
