From a contact in Dallas, R.I.P.: I drove to Breckenridge, Texas to attend a good mans funeral. Every car on the road from the funeral home to the cemetery pulled over and stopped on the side of the road and respectfully paid homage to this great mans last ride home. His is buried on the stark west Texas prairie next to his wife Colonel Betty Sayre. He and wife were leaders of Breckenridge for decades. Even though the Germans prevented them from having children, they shaped the lives of thousands of kids thru their devotion to the school district, the YMCA, Rotary, and general leadership in the community. Ed was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, 3 purple hearts, 3 bronze stars, 3 Legions of Merit, and numerous other awards. Born in the Hardscrabble of the unforgiving western reaches of a windswept state, he embodied the unrelenting characteristics of a thorny bitten land and the timeless honesty of a cattlemans word and handshake. We need more like them.
