Those present include: (A) A physical therapist who has never worked with newborns and the majority of whose patients (~80%) are geriatrics. (B) The adopting parents, neither of whom have even set eyes on the baby. (C) A respiratory therapist with a specialty in newborn care and years of experience caring for preemies and micro-preemies in a childrens hospital at a large nearby city? Who, by the way, was actually present at the delivery, was the 2nd human being (after the delivering physician) to actually hold the child in his arms, and who also took care of the baby throughout the first 10 hours of her life. (D) None of the above. The answer is, of course, A. Or A then B. Do NOT, under any circumstances, go with choice C. Even D is a better option than C. Yes. This actually happened. Not a person of the 14 or so in the room, all of whom knew everything in C (above) thought to ask me a thing. Even though all heard the parents give me permission to freely discuss the patient and her condition. People are funny.
