Kenosha Telegraph History: In 1856 Kenosha Industrialist Zalmon Simmons became the half-owner of an almost certainly doomed telegraph company with an investment of $500. The company, Wisconsin State Telegraph Company, only had one line that ran from Milwaukee to Madison. Out of that measly start Simmons built the Northwest Telegraph Company. Under his leadership the lines extended through Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and into Canada. This acquisition by Simmons would turn out to be a great one as far as profits were concerned. In just nine years, the company owned over 2,300 miles of wire and was valued at $1.5 million.
