From my patio: This morning while the day was dawning we saw a mother deer and her two fawns playing about a neighbors flower bed. She would jump up in the air, skip back and forth, then the offspring would do the same. Then they would run at full speed around the yard, stop and do it all over again. Tried to get it on video but only lasted a short time. Animals play with their young just like we do. As the sky began to brighten the doe made her way toward the safety of the park with the fawns in tow. That was a brief moment of watching nature at its best! Two smaller fawns that I did get some video of that were from another mother Im sure because they stayed to see what my kitty and I were up to watching us curiously for a little while then bounded off. The mother deer will often have their babies close to where we live and leave them most of the day, returning periodically to nurse them. Young fawns have no scent and are covered with white spots to help camouflage them from predators. They will remain motionless when approached by other animals, much like a rabbit does. The eye tends not to see them unless they move slightly, they are well blended into the background. So what have we learned from the animals here today? Nibble grass and flowers, exercise and run like heck if someone approaches! Ha!
