From our grantees at Almost Home Dog Rescue of Ohio: Sweet - TopicsExpress

From our grantees at Almost Home Dog Rescue of Ohio: Sweet Laddie came to Almost Home Dog Rescue of Ohio because his family was moving and could only take two other dogs and a cat, but not their 13-year old Collie. Almost Home was asked if they could take him in so that his family would not drop him off at the local shelter where he would certainly be put down due to his age. It was difficult to watch the children sobbing as the volunteer took Laddie from his home and family that he had known for 13 years. On intake, Laddies coat was shaved due to his dry skin. His senior blood work revealed he was Lyme positive and was put on a four-week cycle of antibiotics. Testing also showed he had hypothyroidism and will have to be on medication for the rest of his life. In addition, Laddies vet visit revealed a slow heart rate that will have to be monitored and may soon need an ECG for further assessment. He is on prescription strength Dasuquin for stiffness and mobility but seems to get along pretty well. His hearing is great and his eyes are good for his age. Laddie has found his voice and gives the neighborhood squirrels a piece of his mind daily. He reserves his tail wags for special moments. This sweet boy is unfailingly polite and waits his turn for dinner. He will quietly approach you after his meal and touch his nose on your hand or leg as if he is saying thank you. If he wants attention, Laddie will stand beside you, patiently waiting until you see him, then the tail will wag, just once, and the ears will go back as he leans in. He will lean into you as long as you keep rubbing him. He will nudge you with his nose to remind you not to stop. He recently visited an assisted care facility with his foster mom to meet his new grandma and has found that he is just the right height to lay a gently head in a residents lap as they sit in their wheelchair. They all declared him beautiful and have asked if he could come back. Laddie has gently nudged his way into many lives that will care for him for the rest of his life. This is one of the many senior dogs that have benefitted from the Doris Day Animal Foundation resulting in many sweet ‘senior moments.’
