From our supporter Danielle Belliveau: I adopted Free Spirit 33 yrs ago in October 1980. He was 17 months old, captured by the Forest Service from the Mt. Shasta area. He is 34 years old now and healthy. He lives at home with me with a 4 year old retired Thoroughbred (off the track). Spirit was blind in the right eye when I adopted him, unbeknown to the Forest Service or BLM. It wasnt until a year later during the vet check that the blindness was discovered. Although the Forest Service offered me another horse, I declined. DNA testing was done on his band of horses and it was determined that these horses were actual descendants of the horses brought over by the conquistadors. Round ups ceased in the area. To this very day, I am humbled by this magnificent horse, Free Spirit. I am so blessed that he has been in my life all these years, and, I am hopeful that he will be with me for a while longer.
