From talking to a number of evolution deniers, Im beginning to understand that at the core of the issue is a religious bias for human exceptionalism. Generally there are no issues accepting microbial evolution, or even some animal evolution. Once humans are brought into the equation however, it doesnt matter what the facts and evidence say. This mindset I believe is born of an inability to accept that humans are not cosmically special. Biases are a big issue when attempting to scientifically determine anything, especially when the subject is humans. This is because every observation that is available today, has been made by humans, with human biases. One of the major triumphs of the scientific method is that it helps to reduce or nearly eliminate these biases. My hypothesis then, about the issue at the core of evolution denial, is an inability of the deniers to look at the situation and empirical evidence objectively. This being due to a religiously based belief in human exceptionalism.
