From the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, a national affiliate member of NCWC: In the wake of Bill C-94 in Quebec (which would have withheld certain public services from women wearing the niqab) and the announcement banning the niqab during Canadian citizenship oath-taking, the niqab and its place in Canada have become hot topics in Canadian public discourse. Noor Cultural Centre is hosting a session, which will present and discuss Canadian Council of Muslim Women’s new report on women who wear the niqab in Canada. Led by Dr Lynda Clarke, the study’s goal is to produce greater understanding of the complexities surrounding the niqab for policy makers, media officials, researchers and members of the public. Speakers: Dr Lynda Clarke is an Associate Professor in Concordia University’s Department of Religion. Her research interests include Shiism, women, law (especially in relation to gender), and Islam in the West. Natasha Bakht teaches at University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law. Professor Bakht’s research interests lie generally in the area of law, culture and minority rights and specifically in the intersecting area of religious freedom and women’s equality. Dr Kathy Bullock is President of the Tessellate Institute and Coordinator of the Canadian Certificate in Muslim Studies Program at Emmanuel College at University of Toronto; she is the author of Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil: Challenging Historical and Modern Stereotypes.
