From the Cat Country newsroom: bit.ly/1wJ3Ltx The Town of Amherst announced Wednesday it has entered into negotiations with Atlantic Industrial Services in Debert to accept treated fracking wastewater for disposal in the town’s Wastewater Treatment Facility. The plan calls for the wastewater to be treated in 2 million litre batches, independently tested and then transported from Debert to Amherst in 30,000 litre truckloads, where it will be put into the treatment facility and discharged without further treatment. The wastewater is to be treated for naturally occurring radioactive materials and put through reverse-osmosis at the AIS facility in Debert, meeting Canadian Council of Environment Ministers and Health Canada guidelines for release into fresh water and requirements for discharge in the town’s Wastewater Discharge By-Law. The town says it expects to receive $500,000 in compensation over the life of the two year contract. An open house will be held at the Amherst Fire Hall on Monday from 4-6:30 p.m., with council considering formal approval of the contract at a special meeting at 7 p.m. on November 10th in council chambers.
