From the Graders Desk This may say amore about me or more about some submitters, but Ill leave that up for debate. Everyone has their own method of organizing their collections. Denomination, date, type, grade, value, etc. the list goes on. My own personal preference for US coins is to start with Deonomination, then Type/design, then Date, then if I have multiples of the same Date/MintMark, by grade in descending order. I also try to keep multiple with each other unless they are part of specific sets just for ease of cataloging. Most of the time, non-bulk or tier submissions for grading tend to follow some form of organization. Obviously, easy ones will be a number of the same coin such as 10 2014 Silver Eagles. Some may have different types of coins but will group like coins together and generally follow either a smallest to largest or vice versa pattern. Mixed dates submissions of the same type of coin might follow the date/mintmark pattern as well. In the cases of set-makers, the submitter will tend to put the coins in the numerical order they wish their set to be displayed. Note: At NGC, the certification number is a seven-dash-three numerical system with the first seven numbers being the invoice number at the top of the form and the final three number representing the line number of the coin in the submission database as it has been entered by the receiving department. The submission entry person will follow the submission form as it is written by the submitter. At times, we do get the submissions where organization is simply non-existant. There will be no rhyme or reason to the order in which the coins were written on the submissions form. At times, this can cause a bit of added difficulty and frustration to the entry person or the grader as certain coins have extra information that is automatically added into the record. Such information includes major varieties and Type designations such as 1956 Type 1 or 2 Franklin Halves or 1964 Accent Hair Kennedy Halves. The frustration comes in when the coins are submitted without any type of organization and we get several of the same coin, such as the 1956 Proof Franklin, scattered through the submission. Obviously, there is no right or wrong way to organize your collection or submission, but at times, I wonder how some submitters minds work in how they decide in what order they write up their submission forms to send in.
