From the Union County Comprehensive Plan, PUBLIC EDUCATION The Union County Public School system operates 29 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, and 5 special schools. In total, these schools use 300 mobile classrooms. According to the Union County Public Schools, enrollment for 2009-20010 [sic] was 38,539 and school capacity was 44,586. Plans for expansion will increase capacity to 44,736. Estimates show that this capacity will be sufficient through 2014-2015. The Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance helps the school district ensure that capacity is available for students before new student generating development (i.e., residential development) is approved. Question (actually a three part question presented as one): What happened to the adequate facilities ordinance mentioned, is the lack of an adequate facilities ordinance a contributing factor in the current situation between BOCC and BOE, and how do you think the BOCC can help to improve the overall situation with the school capacity, future needs and maintenance conditions?
