From the dairy of an old villager to town: ... and then some - TopicsExpress

From the dairy of an old villager to town: ... and then some time in your lifetime you do come across great men and women of the world and wonder that they should be as ordinary looking and sounding as you are: in manners and laughter, in expressions of simple sentiments such as I am starving; lets go eat... and so on... ...those such as Ralph Ellison (Invisible Man), Bernard Malamud (The Fixer), Seamus Heaney (the Irish Nobel Prize winning poet), Susan Sontag, Prof C.D. Wright (under whom I worked as a graduate student for a semester), Al Young (the script writer for Bill Cosby), Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, John Hawkes (one of my professors at Brown), Dave Smith (that remarkable poet from South Carolina) and so on... not to mention a contemporary like Prince Charles... ... and then you hear something happening about them or that they are missing... ...and yet, and yet they are and were so ordinary as you are... ...ah, then, but why, they are just names you hear and feel that you know them somewhat... like Robin Williams... may he rest in peace...
