From the old Newspapers: Reading Mercury, Oxford Gazettte, Newbury Herald, and Berks County Paper, Saturday, May 8, 1858. BOROUGH MAGISTRATES’ OFFICE. Friday, May 7. (Present:- The Mayor; E. W. Gray, J. Alexander, and J. Kimber, Esqrs.) DRUNKENNESS.- Amos Black, and Jane Black, his wife were charged with drunkenness. It appeared that the prisoners were in the “Royal Exchange” public-house, on Thursday, and that Police-constable Justice was called in, when the female prisoner was fighting with another woman; the officer got them into the street, and requested them to go home, but they refused to do so, and the male prisoner interfered, and very much abused the constable; they were then taken into custody. As it proved to be the first time they had been before the Bench, they were discharged, with a severe caution. Amos Black, son of the above, was charged with having committed an unjustifiable assault on Sergeant Hinds, at the same time. The defendant was fined 8s. 6d., including costs, or 14 days imprisonment. The money was paid.
