From time to time, many of us tend to experience an occasional insight, or defining moment, that changes the way we see the world. In my personal life, I cannot pinpoint it to just one occasion, as I have several: surviving my baptism of fire; losing my mother to cancer; exchanging vows with my wife on the beach; holding my baby girl for the first time; finishing my first marathon barefoot; and lately, taking full responsibility for the actions of my men at great personal risk. I firmly believe in committing myself to these insights, as described by psychotherapist and author, Mel Schwartz: “My life is changed because of this insight. I am committed to this change, as of this moment.” These moments were not only instrumental in furthering my personal growth, but also refined my philosophy. This latest episode taught me a few things about myself; Life is difficult. Accept it. Don’t complicate it further; Empathy is the most important leadership attribute; Humility and patience are the most difficult disciplines to acquire; Define your non-negotiables. Know where to draw the line where your integrity in concerned. Walk the talk, even if it kills you. Lastly, great leaders inspire above all else. Be someone’s hero today.
