From way back in the days of the WINDSTAR Dialogue List Honouring Nature. Inspired by John Denver ... W* Dialogue List where we truly interconnected with one and other. We were a force, a small group, sharing ideas and solution and reverence for Peace and Sustainability. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, its the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead W* Dialogue Darling/Starlings, cath meadows What a treat to be alive. I looked up to blue heaven today and found a gathering of starlings swooping and swirling. It was like a magnetic charcoal sketch board or a swarm of busy bees. There certainly was a buzz in the air. It seemed like hundreds of perfect black figures were dancing and changing form. Music! Swoosh! Swish! Freckled tummies together on high were making me high. They formed hearts, ovals, spheres and a kaleidoscope of shapes of magic in motion. They played hide and seek, follow the leader...peek a boo, tradezies, king of the castle and so much more. I could here them teasing; Nah Nah, Nah Nah, Nah Nah… and youre the dirty rascal. What amazement! How quickly they dove to the ledge then soared to the star. They circled, dipped, frolicked and flipped. Soon they disappeared into the bush till another arrived to head em off at the pass. Up up and away, capricious starlings at play. I loved this experience. One circle intertwined with another and without a moments hesitation, they perfectly synchronized. I adored the way theyd band together and orchestrate this way, that way, no this way, that way. A smaller flock broke free and traveled on. Well look at that, they came back! This is freedom. I wondered, who was the leader? It seemed there were so many and it appeared to me they took turns. There were so many drivers and pedestrians around and I questioned how many had even noticed this miracle of barely specs on high. But more than anything, it was the magic of Now, Joy and Oneness that stayed with my heart/mind. Stayed in the still. Can we do this? Because our illustrious ancestors thought that this new continent should be the home for every bird mentioned in each Shakespearean play. :-) So the animals were imported from the British Isles. Some species had to be brought over a number of times in order to be successful. But there was only ONE shipment of starlings, and they were housed in someones home during the winter months and released to general public fanfare in New York Citys Central Park one spring. And from that one group, ALL of our starlings have descended. BTW, the starling is only mentioned ONCE in only ONE of Shakespeares plays. Ive relayed this info to a good friend of mine, and he never hesitates to make some reference to it when we are in an area where we can see a flock of starlings sitting and chatting away. He pointed to them one day and aptly remarked, Those guys came over on the same boat, and theyre STILL talking about it!!! :-) (....and we can thank the same ancestors for pigeons, as well. The farmers of the New World missed the soothing cooing of those birds in their barns.....) Corinne Smith high school librarian and knower of silly facts
