Frustrated with anti-worker policies in Santa Fe? DO SOMETHING! A big welcome to members who have recently joined AFSCME and who are getting your first political and legislative updates! We promise not to spam you, but well have at least one update per week between now and November 4th, which is the last day to vote this year. Some of you may wonder why were involved in political work. Just look at state and university employee pay over the last few years for the answer. A handful of Dems and all Republicans in the state House of Representatives (plus Gov. Martinez) tried to make the pay cuts of the recession permanent, and had we not worked hard for over a decade to elect good pro-worker representatives and senators, state, K-12, and university employees would have had an extra $1 BILLION stolen from our paychecks over the next 10 years. Were truly not partisan--we love to have Republicans on our side, and are especially upset when Democrats turn their backs on us. But the votes tell the story, and the nationally poisonous Republican attacks on public employees have seeped into New Mexico on (mostly) party lines. This fall well be knocking on the doors of other union members, calling them, talking to them at worksites, using social media, and sending factual mailings letting union members, household members, and retirees know where the candidates are on our issues. We dont have the big money of the oil companies and union-busting corporations, so we need YOU--our members--to help spread the word. WE CAN AND WILL WIN THESE ELECTIONS--but none of it is magic. Its fun, theres camraderie, good food, and a feeling of satisfaction you can only get from helping educate others. Actually, it IS kind of magical, but it only happens if you show up at Labor 2014 (later in August in Albuquerque, and right after Labor Day in Santa Fe and Las Cruces). In the meantime, this Saturday, August 9th, please help out some of these outstanding allies in their battles to go to Santa Fe to represent us during the session. There are no stipends for this volunteering (there will be during Labor 2014, though), just the satisfaction of fighting the good fight for our jobs and families! ALL VOLUNTEERING IS ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 9TH ALBUQUERQUE: AFSCMEs own Josh Anderson will be joined by Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham and ABQ City Councilor Diane Gibson in canvassing on Saturday morning. Were meeting at Chelwood Park at 10:30 a.m., and Chelwood Park is a block south of Lomas NE and two blocks west of Tramway NE. If youre up in the North Valley or closer to Rio Rancho, you can help State Representative Emily Kane. Call Mark at 505-553-3565 for details. SANTA FE / EL DORADO: If you are a registrar (a person allowed to register others to vote--you have to sign up at the County Clerks office on Grant St. near the Plaza to be a registrar), please join State Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richards team at the Center for Progress and Justice at 1420 Cerrillos Rd (across from the Indian School) at noon on Saturday to get unregistered voters to register. Well be going out to the La Cienega area. If you are not a registrar or you live closer to El Dorado, come to the Agora Shopping Center at 7 Avenida Vista Grande in El Dorado to help state representative candidate Matthew McQueen at 2:00 p.m. LAS CRUCES: You have your choice of two terrific candidates to canvass for on Saturday morning: 1) Joanne Ferrarys team is meeting at the Dona Ana County Democratic Party HQ at 136 Water St. at 8:30 a.m. and will have canvassing and phonebanking available; 2) Phillip Archuletas crew will be meeting at 9:00 a.m. for a training and going out on doors at 10:00 a.m. at the same location--136 Water St. CHAPPARAL: Join Mariaelena Johnsons team at The Grind in the shopping mall at 309 Red Sun Drive, #2 in Chapparal for coffee and canvassing!
