Fuengirola (Costa del Sol) Being only 25 kilometres away from Malaga Costa del Sol International Airport, the town of Fuengirola is one of the most popular places to visit on the Costa del Sol and is easily accessible by bus, car or rail. Previously, a tiny fishing village, the town of Fuengirola has become a vibrant metropolis with character. The advent of many up-market tapas bars, good cafes and restaurants, interspersed with chic boutiques and other shops of interest, as well as fabulous beaches makes it the perfect place to be. The main square, Plaza de la Constitución, has been re-designed but still retains its unique enchantment and looks especially pretty when it is decorated with very attractive lights and ornaments for the Fuengirola Feria (Summer Fair), when the whole town takes part in the annual street celebrations. A walk down the narrow, pedestrian streets leading off the main square is a voyage of discovery for the many visitors, who come across some of the hidden secrets and delightful corners of this really friendly and attractive town. In recent years the municipality has made enormous investments towards improving the infrastructure in Fuengirola, not only to maintain a super atmosphere for its visitors, but also to make this a wonderful place to live. The results speak for themselves and have brought Fuengirola into the 21st century, while never losing sight of the rich historic past and traditional Andalucian roots. One of Fuengirola’s main attractions is, of course, its’ wonderful 7 kilometres of sandy beaches, stretching from the Sohail Castle to the west and Torreblanca to the east. Where water sports are strongly featured and where better to get to grips with speed boats, jet skis or fishing gear than at the cool marina. For keen golfers too, Fuengirola is also ideal, as it is right in the heart of golfing territory, with Mijas Golf, just a few kilometres from the town centre and many more courses within a very close radius. There are also many cultural activities that take place in Fuengirola during the summer. Including a Festival of Music and Dance celebrated in the Sohail Castle. In the same place there is also a Medieval Market, the Fuengirola Feria (Summer Fair).[3] Other events worth mentioning include the Cinema Festival of Fuengirola, the International Faire and the International Faire of the Villages and also the International Festival of Latin Rhythms. There is also a second hand street market every Saturday, being the most famous market in the Costa del Sol where almost any object can be found. On Sundays there is also another market in the Doña Sofía Park.
