Fun Drill of the Week: When coaching last week I made the last - TopicsExpress

Fun Drill of the Week: When coaching last week I made the last half of practice low key and all about fun with purpose, of course, and here’s something new that is super simple but everyone seemed to enjoy… try it out.. Everlasting Relay Race: Skills: Quick acceleration from a complete stop/catching opposing jammer(speed skating/sprinting) Level: All/Mixed Split into 2 teams. Have each team line up on the outside of the track behind a set line or cone exactly opposite track from one another. Have some sort of object that can be used as a “baton” to hand off from player to player for each team and give it to the first person in each line. Blow the whistle to start and the first player in each line, races around the track, staying in bounds, while the second player gets ready for the teammate to hand them the baton and take their turn sprinting around the track. The point is for one team to catch up and tag one of the players from the other team. This can take several rounds and by alternating fast and less fast players, sometimes the gap gets super close to closing, only to widen again. Have some sort of incentive for the winning team. You really have to take off fast when you are handed the baton, in order to not be “caught” as the other team is speeding around to your side of the track. It was fun seeing the look on skaters’ faces when they had someone close on their tail and seeing how they were capable of pushing hard and getting an extra burst, when they needed to get away.
