Fun fact: Christians have a hard time claiming moral superiority - TopicsExpress

Fun fact: Christians have a hard time claiming moral superiority for a few reasons: (1) As shown with the Euthyphro Dilemma. Its found in Platos Euthyphro dialogue, in which Socrates asks the question, Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods? In laymans terms this would be, Is that which is good commanded by God because its good, or is it good because God commands it? So either morality is completely arbitrary (i.e., something is good because God decrees it) or morality is completely separate (i.e., God acknowledges it as good and decrees it). Either way, theism fails to answer the moral question. (2) The Bible doesnt provide a normative framework. All it does is lay out commandments. It gives us no reason why certain things are wrong. They just are. Instead of giving us a basis on which to place moral evaluations, God decided to list off a bunch of rights/wrongs.
