Funding for Kakuma Refugee Camp Germany will provide additional funding of about 6 million Euro for Kakuma refugee camp and host communities. According to the UNHCR KENYA, Kakuma currently provides shelter to more than 174.000 refugees. More people are expected to arrive in the camp, due to the rainy season and the ongoing conflict in South Sudan. Already today, Kakuma refugee camp hosts far more refugees than its capacity of 125.000 people. Therefore, “the additional funding from the German Government intends to relieve the increasing pressure from the camp”, said Lars Wilke, Head of Cooperation, during his visit to Kakuma on 28 October. “The additional funding is part of a special initiative of the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany to address the tremendous increase of refugees worldwide.” The program will be implemented by GIZ until 2017 and will focus on improving the livelihoods and access to basic services of both, the refugees and host communities. Furthermore, local conflict prevention and resolution will be addressed as part of the program. GIZ will coordinate its activities with UNHCR and the World Food Programme. The implementation of the project will start in January 2015. The current program comes as an addition to the existing projects implemented by AMREF Kenya and Johanniter International. The German Federal Foreign Office directly supports the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kenya and contributed more than 7 million USD to UNHCR’s activities in the refugee camps of Dadaab and Kakuma in 2013 and 2014.
