G unit I am going to piggy back your football story with one of my own. Looking back my favorite football memories in high school were not of any games we won or lost. I loved the summer times. Training with all of the guys. Being around your best friends. And when we were done we would spend the rest of the day hanging out, usually at the Doran pool or at the lake. Apple juice always provided… But anyway, that summer before our senior year of football, somebody finally showed me how to properly grip a football so I could throw a tighter ball much farther down field. But to make that change stick I needed a lot of reps. So many days that summer it was Mike and me out on the practice field just the two of us. Now I had it easy, I would take a 1, 3, or 5 step drop and let the football rip. As for Mike, I had him running his butt off doing patterns for me all over the place. And he had to run each one as hard as he could otherwise our timing would be off. He was a horse for me that summer. We made each other so much better and it definitely played a big role in our team’s success that season. The season before I had a lot of wounded ducks trying to throw deep! Our last game that year against Dowling up in the Dome (the last Ames high team to go to the dome I should mention), the very last play I made as a quarter back for Ames High was a touchdown pass to Mike in the corner of the end zone. And the thing was the Dowling defender actually had the coverage on the play, but Mikes route and our timing on the play was perfect. That particular route was the same one we ran so many times starting all the way back at the beginning of the summer on the practice field. I still even remember the play. Twins Right Red Right 473…. Stevermer feel free to chime in anytime pal. Anyways that was maybe my favorite thing about my senior year of football. Completing that pass for a touch down to Mike in the Dome seemed to be an appropriate bookend to something the two of us started that summer back on the practice field. Of course doing all that with a best friend made it all so much sweeter. As far as football goes, I was a sloth who was lucky he could throw a football a long way. Mike was a natural athlete. He was so quick, he was a Wes Welker out there. Mike, you failed me only once that year when you dropped that wide open 60 yard bomb I had in the Ft Dodge game (we killed them so it didn’t matter) but you made up for it with an awesome catch in the Dome I will never forget.
