GAIA The scientist James Lovelock wrote a book called Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth. after the Greek name of the Goddess who represented the planet earth in all her beauty. There is a famous photograph of the earth on the bookcover seen from outer space; a small blue and green planet wreathed by white clouds, touching in her fragility in the infinate cosmos. Gaia has been the source of a new awakening, seized upon by progressives defending Mother Nature. The Gaia legend evokes recognition of the interconnectedness of everything within the organism that is Mother Earth, and the need to recognize and treasure that delicate balance. A recent catchism of the Catholic Church somewhat reflects on this notion: A religious respect for the integrity of creation. Gradually, we may all, including male economists and physicists acknowledge the source of life and her importance. Gaia today symbolizes the awe and wonder of the natural world... Imagine ones child exploring the natural landscape; Eden most untouched by man. Throughout time nature has provided human beings with spiritual as well as material and human nourishment. William Wordsworth recollected his early childhood: There was a time when meadows, grove and stream, The earth and every common sight, To me did seem Apparelld in celestial light... [1807] ...And the priest poet; Gerald Manley Hopkins, in 1877, [Part of Gods Grandeur] : ....And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights of the black west went, Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs - Because the Holy Ghost over the bent - world broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.
