GENEAL MUSHARRAF WILL GE SYMBOLIC SENTENCE AND FORCE DEPARTURE FROM PAKISTAN. EXCELLENT VIEW--PLEASE READ ONE A4 SIZE ARTCLE when General Pervez Musharraf was considering returning to Pakistan before the general elections, his former colleagues advised him to stay away. He refused. When he underwent sheer humiliation inside and outside courtrooms and had his sprawling farmhouse converted into a sub-jail, the same colleagues offered him a safe passage. He refused again. Now that he will face treason charges under the highly romanticized Article 6 of the Constitution, he is left with very limited choices. This time, refusal may not be an option.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced that his government will try the former military dictator. Sources privy to the developments say Sharif took the top military brass into confidence before making the announcement. The government believes that by imposing emergency rule on November 3, 2007, Gen Musharraf had committed an act of high treason. The federal cabinet unanimously backed the decision, but hardly two or three ministers had prior knowledge of what transpired in several rounds of unannounced deliberations.Given the expected reaction from the army, Riyadh and Washington, the PML-N government will only hold a symbolic trial of Gen Musharraf. "It seems the plan is not to hang him, but to set an example," a senior PML-N leader said. The trial and conviction will take several months. The government is supposed to constitute a special trial court for the purpose. Under the High Treason Act of 1973, anyone guilty of high treason is to be punished with death or life imprisonment. If found guilty, the former general will most likely get symbolic punishment like that of Yousaf Raza Gilani, who faced a sentence of less than two minutes but had to lose the office of the Prime Minister. - See more at: thefridaytimes/beta3/tft/article.php?issue=20130628&page=7#sthash.W3SKR1TA.dpuf
