It’s really important to accept the guidance of others, and to take on board any gentle shunts (or steel-toed kicks up the rear) that God might give to you through your fellow homo-sapiens. However, it’s down to you and God to determine what’s for you and what isn’t. Just because your parents want you to be a doctor, doesn’t automatically mean that’s what God wants. You’ve got to have an open enough mind for God to guide you to what you should be doing, even if it’s entirely different to what your mates and family think you should be doing. The world has different ideas of “success” than God. The most successful person in God’s kingdom isn’t necessarily a CEO in an Armani suit. So, defy the world’s expectations. God does. Paul told Timothy, ‘Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.’, because people thought Timothy was an inexperienced kid. It’s easy to let people define what your life should look like, and just assume that they’re right because they’re older/cleverer/genuinely lovely. But Paul thought differently; and so does God. So get God’s opinion. In the end it’s the only one that counts. What now? Go get an empty piece of paper and sign your name at the bottom. It’s a contract. It means you agree to whatever plan God has for you, even if you don’t know what that plan is quite yet. It means you trust Him. Now, hang it on your wall, in your car, or somewhere you can see it, and remember what it means.
