“GIVE ME SCOTLAND OR I DIE” Born in the year 1513/1514, at Gifffordgate, a suburb of the town Haddington (16 M.e of Edinburgh) He was a great reformer noted for this FAITH and PRAYER, which stood him out and made his name widely known throughout Christendom. During his timer, the Roman Catholic Church with all it’s corruption and degration, had great power and influence in the British Isles. The Queen of England and many of the high officials in the state were nothing but tools in the hands of the POPE’ in persecuting and destroying the protestants; they were jailed and imprisoned, as well as at stake, making all the denoted children of God suffered beyond description. The whole land then, was indeed made as scene of desolation by the POPE and his high officials. Many HERO/HEROINE of Faith were buried alive for their faith and devotion to the protestant religion. Despite the dangers and persecutions that put their freedom at stake, yet the Giffordgate born Reformer, protestant, Hero of Faith and Great Warriors of great Revival – JOHN KNOX (The Founder of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland) – was deeply moved in his heart and consistently cry to God day and night in prayer to save Scotland. At one time, He was so greatly burdened for Scotland that he retired for secrete prayer, but was soon discovered by some of his friends through his groans. They heard him groan out “GIVE ME SCOTLAND OR I DIE”. Then after some moments, they heard him repeated these same word “GIVE ME SCOTLAND OR I DIE”, breathing out the longings of his soul, until he found relief. And God gave him Scotland, and the flame of the fire of revival he prayed for, enveloped the whole of Scotland, and there was great harvest of souls for Jesus. When the Queen on the throne at that period – Her Majesty, QUEEN MARY OF SCOTS. – Saw what happened to her Kingdom, she confessed this – “I FEAR THE PRAYER OF JOHN KNOX, MORE THAN ALL THE ASSEMBLED ARMIES OF EUROPE’S”. In the Sixty Seventh (67) years of his age, he was very ill, and he called his wife and said, “READ ME THAT SCRIPTURE WHERE I FIRST CAST MY ANCHOR.” After he listened to the glorious prayer of Jesus recorded in John 17 : 1 – 26, read by his wife. He seemed to forget his weakness, and began to pray – (1) He earnestly interceded for his fellowmen, (2) He prayed for the ungodly who had this far rejected the gospel. (3) He pleaded for the recently converted Christians (4) He requested protection of the Lord’s servants, many of whom were facing persecution. As he continues in prayer, He said “I NOW COMMEND MY SOUL INTO THY HANDS”. A few moments after, he exclaimed, “NOW IT IS COME”. His spirit went home to be with the LORD. He bid the earth farewell in the year 1572. At his burier, in the final resting place of his mortal body – THE EARL OF MORTOUN, who was the regent of Scotland at that time, stood in the presence of an immense concourse and present a short speech thus: “HERE LAYETH A MAN WHO IN HIS LIFE NEVER FEARED THE FACE OF MAN, WHO HATH BEEN OFTEN THREATENED WITH DAGGE AND DAGGER, BUT YET HATH ENDED HIS DAYS IN PEACE AND HONOR.” SOME OF HIS WORDS “A man with God is always in the majority.” “You cannot antagonize and influence at the same time” “None have I corrupted, none have I defrauded; merchandise have I not made.” “No one else holds or has held the place in the heart of the world which Jesus holds. Other gods have been as devoutly worshipped; no other man has been so devoutly loved.” --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- -------- “Must I go, and empty-handed? Must I meet my Saviour so? Not one soul with which to greet Him: Must I empty- handed go? Only remembered, Only remembered, Only remember by what we have done Thus we would pass through the earth and it’s toiling Only remembered by what we have done Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown, When at evening the sun goeth down? When I wake with the blest in the mansions of rest, Will there be any stars in my crown? I pray God will instill in us such a passion and zeal for Sinners.
