GM Wentzville Promotes STEM Learning with Robotics Challenge Some may call them “Geeks,” but there were some pretty smart – and proud – middle and high school students showing off their robotics knowledge (today/last Friday/March 7th), thanks to support from GM Wentzville Assembly for the 15th annual General Motors Robotics Challenge at St. Charles Community College (SCC). Organizers at SCC say it is the largest Robotics Challenge ever, with 161 students and 27 teams competing this year. Students used LEGO kits to build robots that perform simulated manufacturing tasks. This year’s project involved a pedestal welder exercise, simulating a robot delivering sheet metal to a pedestal for welding. For SCC, it’s a major opportunity to educate local students on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs, while having fun at the same time. “We are so grateful to GM Wentzville for its support,” said SCC’s Tammie DeLosSantos, who coordinates the college’s STEM activities. “Without GM’s participation, this competition wouldn’t be possible, and we are so glad to be able to offer this learning opportunity for students in our area.” “This is my sixth year organizing the Robotics Challenge, and it never ceases to amaze me with the robotics solutions these kids come up with,” said Brian Steber, GM Wentzville Senior Manufacturing Engineer. “There are some really bright, young students here who will go a long way in manufacturing or whatever career they choose.” Students were judged on their teamwork and presentation, in addition to design and engineering. GM Wentzville employees Stan Lubiewski, Mike Dunston and Tom Johnson also led breakout sessions for the Challenge competitors on ultraviolet video technology.
