GMA NEWS: DEC. 5, 2013 Dubai singer to hold 25-hour singathon for Yolanda victims After seeing for himself the extent of the destruction caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), a Dubai-based singer-philanthropist will hold on Thursday a 25-hour singathon to raise funds for them. While Glen Perry admitted the idea of singing and playing the guitar and piano for 25 hours straight may be torture, he said it could not be worse than losing almost everything to the typhoon. I will put myself through a lot of torture but that is just minuscule compared to the pain and suffering they’ve gone through. They’ve lost their money, family, children, their entire livelihood, Perry said in an interview with Gulf News. The Gulf News report said the singathon will start 6 p.m. Thursday at the Arabian Courtyard Hotel. Entrance is free, but donations are welcome. More than 5,600 people were killed when Yolanda tore through Visayas and Southern Luzon last Nov. 8. Perry went on a 10-day relief work in areas in Layete affected by Yolanda. A photo posted on Gulf News showed the singer among children survivors in Tacloban City. “After six hours, the body gives way. Then, it’s just torture. But I will continue. I will do the 25-hour singathon for the typhoon victims, come what may, in the hope that the world listens to me to stay and continue helping the Philippines,” Perry said. Gulf News said this was not the first time Perry would do a “Singathon” or marathon singing. He did a 24-hour singathon in 2010 for World Hunger Day, though he sipped water in between. For Thursday, he said he will fast for 25 hours straight despite advice from friends and doctors not to do so. Perry had injured his fingers while continuously playing the guitar during his last singathon. — LBG, GMA News
