GMA NEWS: NOV. 26, 2013 2 weeks after Yolanda, Tacloban airport still in ‘dark ages’ TACLOBAN CITY - More than two weeks after super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) battered Visayas and Southern Luzon, the airport here continues to operate in the dark. With power still out except for some vital areas as of Tuesday morning, airport personnel had to conduct check-in and security procedures manually. Megaphones were used instead of public address systems while posters of missing persons were plastered on the airports posts instead of being flashed on TV monitors. Instead of running baggage through an x-ray machine, airport security manually inspected the contents of bags. But an airport employee said they expect a generator to start powering key systems as early as within the day to later this week. Until then, power to computers being used to confirm flight schedules and bookings was sourced from the nearby Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines office. The airport here was among the structures heavily damaged by Yolanda, which left more than 5,000 dead. The Department of Energy swore to restore power in the Yolanda-hit areas on or before Dec. 24, saying it – along with other related agencies – were scrambling to repair the power infrastructure that Yolanda destroyed. —KG, GMA News
