GO TO THE ANTS A couple years ago I had a debate with a brother in church on my way home after service. He maintained that it is possible for the world to run without money. He meant the economics, the systems and government can run without cash. I thought it was totally absurd to even think that, I asked him to give me reasonable reasons why but he couldnt give me anything satisfactory. We both didnt get to agree and left for our way. The next day was Monday, I was alone at my cousin’s house curled up in a couch just brooding when the debate came to mind again, I just shrugged off the thought and concluded it was virtually impossible to have a functional world without a means of exchange of value. Right about that same minute, I heard a voice clearly calling out to me from within me and it said “come downstairs”. I don’t remember hesitating a moment as I took my walk downstairs, and as I stepped out to close the door behind me, my eyes were fixed on a small ant hill a few meters away from where I stood so I walked towards it. I was always fascinated by ants growing up, I will sit for hours watching them dart up and down. I also read about them in some Charlie Brown children books I had and watched many documentaries about them at every opportunity, so I knew quite a lot about them. As I bent over to take a look at the tiny creatures, I heard the voice ask me “Do they have a form of government?” I answered yes, they practised Monarchy, this is true because every ant colony has a queen who the colony basically works for. He asked “Do they have a health system?” I answered yes because ants have nurses who do the nest cleaning and take care of the larva or baby ants given birth to by the queen. He asked “how about an army or a military system?” I answered yes because ants do have soldiers who protect the colony and sometime attack other colonies, they do also hunt, kill and bring food back in little chucks for the colony. He continued, “Do they have construction and engineering?” yes I answered because there are ant workers who build the ant hills which consists of several tunnels, rooms, passages and labyrinths. How about an agricultural system ? I could only answer yes because there are worker ants who gather food for the colony to eat and the rest for storage, some farmer ants are known to take care of the larvae of aphids or other insects. The reason is that these insects release a sweet sap, and the ants seem to be raising them to obtain a supply of the sap rather than eating them. As long as these insects are being cared for by ants, they are protected from other enemies and the ants collect their honey. Finally he asked “Do they have money?” I answered No, there and then my heart sank into the wonder of God’s wisdom in creation. I sat on the bare floor, I was in awe. Today I marvel at God’s ways and I understand that there are indeed eternal currencies that gives living more meaning than the illusion of money could. Sacrifice, hope, service, joy, peace, kindness etc embedded in love are eternal currencies worth exchanging for eternity in the brief time we exist here. Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider their ways and be wise!
