GOD’S HOLINESS VERSUS OUR SINFULNESS June 25, 2014 ISAIAH 6: 1-10 Under King Uzziah, Judah had flourished economically and militarily. However, when in pride he tried to usurp the powers of the priests to make sacrifices before the Lord, the priests boldly withstood him. For his arrogance, God struck him with leprosy and he lived in isolation till he died (2 Chron. 26: 16-21). Uzziah’s behaviour probably brought discouragement to those who looked up to him as a godly king and God gave Isaiah this vision to encourage and strengthen his faith in the face of human failure. Secondly, a vision of God’s holiness showed Isaiah his sinfulness and the need to be humble, especially as he had seen what pride had done to a good king with a distinguished reign. If Isaiah should serve God well, he must learn to be humble. Thirdly, the vision raised the awareness of the urgency to warn the people of the approaching judgement for their spiritual complacency and also prepared him for the challenging ministry ahead of him. Today, we too need a fresh vision of God’s glory and holiness, so that we can in humility, repent of our sins. Only then can God use us effectively to warn others of their need for repentance and change. Prayer: Lord, reveal Your glory upon my life so that I will shine as light for You in this dark world.
