............GOING DOWN MEMORY LANE............GRANDMAS APRON.......The principle use of an apron was to protect the dress beneath it, but it also served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven......It was wonderful for drying childrens tears and was sometimes used for wiping a dirty face.......From the chicken coop, it was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.......When company came the apron became the ideal hiding place for shy kids.......Often wnen the weather turned cool Grandma could be seen with the apron wrapped around her arms....... Those aprons wiped a perspiring brow, as she bent over the hot wood stove.......A large apron could hold lots of chips and kindling wood as it was brought into the kitchen.......From the garden, aprons were used to carry in all sorts of vegetables, and after the peas had been shelled, the apron was again used to carry out the hulls.......In the fall Grandmas apron was used to carry in apples that had fallen to the ground from the heavily loaded trees.......When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds before being discarded to reveal to the company the clean dress beneath.......When dinner was ready, Grandma walked onto the porch, waved her apron as she called and all the men knew it was time to stop work and come to the table.......An apron served as a napkin when she stopped to rest a spell and have coffee from a mug.......Can you remember taking a nap in Grandmas lap, covered up against the cool air with her apron, as she rocked you in her wooden rocking chair.......Nothing will ever replace Grandmas old time apron that served so many purposes.
