GONE ARE THE DAYS #2 Gone are the days when an African woman was an icon in her own right – unsurpassed, full, natural, larger than life, an epitome of virgin beauty…. But Gone! Gone are the intricately designed and body-hugging Kaba and 3-sisters slit skirts that made Versace blush like a kindergarten toddler. Oh, how I miss those days! Gone! Gone are the proud standing afro, bofloat and achormor hair designs that stood as statues of African feminine liberty; Revlon and L’Oreal like soap water. Oh, how I miss those days! Gone! Gone are the high flying Grace-Jones shoulder pads. Pads that made midgets and Lilliputs of American football stars. Oh, how I miss those days! Gone! Gone are the shinny, healthy, shea-buttered skins and the coconut oiled necks that forced even King Solomon to write “Lover, Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves” Gone! Gone are the full-figured, fully-rounded and fully-shock absorbent African women that made our fathers exclaim in awe - “great is thine faithfulness” Gone! Gone are the days when her bewitching spells of aromatic soup and tender porridge was enough to tame the hearts of her men through their stomach. Gone forever. Gone! Gone! They are all gone. Gone, are the days when the African woman was just who she was - African. But gone! Gone with the size zero; gone with the almost naked silicon clad fashionista pieces of clothes called fashion; gone with the hair of the dead and the skin tones of lost identities; gone with the ipad recipes and pizza orders; gone with the make-ups that show two faces of one woman; gone with the wrongly perceived power of equality that throws disrespect in the eyes of honourable men; gone with children denied the nature of a mother’s breast; gone with it all, in the name of modernity. If, you are one of the few remaining true African women out there – Stay African, we are proud of you. Adapt, adopt, but don’t let modernity corrupt your Africanness. Be you, be African. #BeYouBeAfrican
