ON THIS DAY IN: 1777 - British forces under General John Burgoyne surrendered to American troops in Saratoga, New York. It was a turning point of the Revolutionary War. 1914 - An earthquake struck Greece and Asia Minor, killing over 3,000 people. 1931 - Mobster Al Capone was convicted of income tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison. 1941 - USS Kearney became the first destroyer attacked by a German submarine, when it was torpedoed south of Iceland. 1943 - The Young Communist League declared itself dissolved at a convention in New York and 400 delegates organize American Youth for Democracy, which only offers membership to non-Communists. 1945 - Colonel Juan Peron staged a coup in Argentina. 1960 - Charles Van Doren, a former contestant on the popular TV game show Twenty-One, was arrested along with 13 others, including television producers Dan Enright and Al Freedman, for perjury. 1973 - Leaders of OPEC decided to suspend oil exports to all nations supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War. The embargo caused major shortages and gas rationing. 1978 - President Jimmy Carter signed a bill restoring U.S. citizenship to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. 1979 - Mother Teresa of India was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 1989 - An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck northern California, killing 67 people and causing $7 billion worth of damage. It was witnessed on live television by millions of people who were watching the third game of the World Series of baseball, being played in San Francisco. 2001 - Israels tourism minister, Rehavam Zeevi was shot to death by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in the first assassination of a serving Cabinet minister.
