The FTSE 100 is called to open -0.10% lower at 6780 The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed -0.4%, to 16987.51. The S&P 500 index lost -0.6%, to 1985.54 Nasdaq Composite Index fell -0.5%, to 4567.60. Hang Seng China down -0.20% to 25,190.12 Nikkei 225 Japan up +0.15% to 15,948.29 COMMENTARY The Dow industrials fell Friday and snapped a five-week streak of weekly gains, as investors eyed a measure of retail sales and looked ahead to a Federal Reserve meeting next week. For the week, the Dow fell 0.9% and the S&P 500 dropped 1.1%. In each case, the loss was the first for the index since the week ended Aug. 1. On the heels of stocks run to recent highs, many investors say U.S. companies shares are appropriately valued and due for a pullback. Moreover, some say stocks could see choppy trading if the Federal Reserve raises interest rates sooner than expected, reversing an accomodative stance widely believed to have added fuel to stocks rally in recent years. LOOKING LOCAL JSE All-Share currently 51,247.71 JSE Top 40 currently 45,865.20 COMMENTARY TRADING on the JSE this morning has been at a standstill due to a technical glitch. South Africas rand fell to seven-month lows against the dollar on Friday, largely reflecting a stronger greenback as recent data backs the case for monetary tightening in the United States. At 1550 GMT the rand traded at 10.9985 versus the dollar, down 0.21 percent from Thursdays close. If fell to 11.0300 earlier in day, the weakest it has been since Feb 21 according to Thomson Reuters data. Government bonds followed suit, with the yield on the 2026 benchmark adding 4.5 basis points to 8.26 percent.
